Newburgh was first explored by Europeans when Henry Hudson’s expedition came through the area in 1609. It was settled a century later and originally called the Palatine Parish; the name was changed to the Parish of Newburgh in 1752. During the American Revolution, the area served an important purpose as the headquarters for the Continental Army.
Newburgh itself was incorporated as a village in 1800 and later chartered as a city in 1865. Originally located in Ulster County, Newburgh now falls within Orange County’s jurisdiction. The city’s population is 28,866. It is home to numerous historical landmarks, including the Dutch Reformed Church.
